"Why Thanksgiving Comes Before Christmas"
Thanksgiving was officially added as a U.S. federal holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, during the Civil War. Before that it had been celebrated somewhat unevenly throughout the years as a harvest festival since 1789, and is now firmly established as the last Thursday in November, this being recognized as the beginning of the fall-winter holiday season. But there is a deeper symbolic reason we give thanks BEFORE we receive gifts.
